The Association for Women in Slavic Studies and the Slavic Reference Service will join forces in 2024 to commemorate the memory and the work of the late Mary Fleming Zirin, a pioneer in Slavic and East European women’s studies, a founder of AWSS, a fervent supporter of SRS, and a frequent participant in the SRS Summer Research Lab, on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Working as an independent scholar, Mary Zirin amassed information and shared it generously with others, both informally and through her well-known publications, such as the Dictionary of Russian Women Writers (1994), Women & Gender in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, and Eurasia: A Comprehensive Bibliography (2007), and the Current Bibliography still regularly produced by AWSS. She also defended the work and the rights of independent researchers. SRS is today directly supported by Mary Zirin’s generosity and it houses her extensive online Bibliography of Pre- Revolutionary Writings by Women, a searchable database.
